Gillian Clarke Exclusive One-Day Poetry Workshop (All Day)
For one day only, a poetry workshop from Welsh National poet Gillian Clarke. Get help unleashing your creativity. For wordsmiths, poets, writers, creatives, men, women.

Join other like minded writers and poetry lovers to spend the day working with Gillian Clarke, former National Poet of Wales.

Gillian tutors just one poetry masterclass a year at Ty Newydd with Carol Anne Duffy and one with another fine tuned poet.

So this one-day workshop for The Brook is a one-off, unique opportunity, not to be missed.

The morning will begin with a meet-and-greet cup of tea or coffee (biscuits included), followed by a round-the-table workshop to prompt new work. This will be followed by quiet writing time, and a period of sharing and discussion before lunch.

During the afternoon everyone will have time to write, and take turn to have a brief one-to-one with Gillian before all gathering for the final sharing, which is usually celebratory. You will leave with poems, drafts of poems, and ideas to work on in the future.

Places are limited to twelve, so book quickly to avoid disappointment.

You are also invited to stay for the evening reading and Zoology Book Launch and the ticket price is included for workshop attendees.

Special Needs Carriage Opening Day - Riverside Park Miniature Railway (10:00 am - 4:00 pm)
We are an enthusiastic group of volunteers running model steam and diesel trains on our track at Riverside Park, Bitterne. This is located next to the childrens playground at the Cobden Bridge end of the park. We are open every Sunday from 1pm to 4pm up to mid-October, giving rides to the public for £1 a double circuit of the track. Monies raised go towards the upkeep, maintenance and running costs of the track and grounds. During the summer, we have been working on a number of projects all aimed towards being able to run a Special Needs Carriage to take wheelchair users. Visitors would have seen a metal skeleton of hoops appearing – these will form a tunnel to take our existing passenger trolleys whilst the curved concrete base nearby will provide support for the track which will connect the trolley tunnel to the raised running track. Our Special Needs Carriage, to take wheelchairs, is now built and we are expecting delivery later in September. Our members have also been very busy building all the other equipment, including coal bunkers and sidings and mechanical bits (a technical term!) to allow the new equipment to run smoothly and safely. This means that we shall be holding a Special Needs Carriage Grand Opening Day on Sunday 22 October. We shall have a ribbon cutting ceremony, and the first rides for wheelchair users pulled by one of our steam trains. Please come along, for we would love to see as many visitors as possible to support us with the launch of our new service to the community. Other trains will also be running as normal on our raised track.

Light In The Night Party - Ascension Centr (4:00 pm - 6:00 pm)
We’re excited to be hosting another of our Light in the Night parties for families on 31 October from 4 – 6pm in the Grace Hall, in the Ascension Centre.

It’s a great alternative to Hallowe’en for families of all ages. This year we’re having a Captain Underpants theme. If you like, come dressed up as Captain Underpants, or any other super hero. That means grown-ups too if you can manage it.

There will be silly games, tasty food and plenty of fun all round.

All children must be accompanied by an adult please.
