Those living and working in the area are being asked for feedback on new proposals to add traffic lights to Woodmill Bridge.

The council’s Highways Service Partnership says it has sent out 2435 letters to properties either side of Woodmill Bridge asking for a sample of views on proposals “to improve journey time” through new traffic signals, and will be displaying plans and more details at the Woodmill Activity Centre on October 10.
A spokesperson said at this stage it’s an “informal consultation to look at proposed design and to gauge public opinion”.
The Partnership’s letter says: “Following numerous requests to investigate adding traffic signals to the bridge, the council were able to observe how the bridge operated with temporary signals during some recent maintenance work.
“We recorded a significant increase in the amount of vehicles that could get through with signals. This would likely decrease the amount of congestion on both sides of the bridge at peak times. However we also observed that signals increased journey times at all other times of the day.”
Lights at certain times only
The proposal is to add lights either side of Woodmill Bridge which would operate at peak times only, or when a queue is detected.
A crossing for pedestrians and cyclists over Woodmill Lane from Riverside Park is also proposed.
“The cost of the work has not been finalised as we are still at the proposal stage. What has made it more viable to install signals is advances in the reliability of wirelessly linked traffic signals,” the spokesperson told bitternepark.info.
It was suggested in 2007 that traffic lights at Woodmill could cost around £100,000.
• You can talk to officers and view the plans on October 10 from 3-7pm at the Woodmill Activity Centre, Woodmill Lane, Southampton, SO18 2JR.
