civic centreThe council is inviting further feedback on plans to set up a trading company, so it can trade with other organisations to “support the recovery of costs and invest funds back into council services”.

Southampton City Council, which ran an initial consultation last year, says that setting up a Local Authority Trading Company (LATCo) will mean it can “fully develop” its commercial services, and, according to the council’s website:

  • Compete in the market place for new business
  • Sell services to more organisations, including in the private sector
  • Generate more income than we currently can as a council
  • Make a profit to invest back into council services.

Leader of Southampton City Council Cllr Simon Letts, pictured, said: “While the council continues to face financial pressures from decreasing funding and increasing demand for services, it is looking at new and creative ways to increase income.

“Last year, we received a positive response from staff and residents in Southampton on our initial plans for a LATCo as long as we did not involve external improvement partners.  As we move into the second stage of the consultation, we welcome views on our more detailed proposals.”

The consultation runs until April 10, 2018. You can rind out more about it and take part at
