big cheese keep outCampaigners are celebrating because plans to convert the former Big Cheese pub on West End Road in Bitterne into homes have been rejected, according to The Daily Echo.

The pub was given “Asset of Community Value” status in April last year by Southampton City Council under the Community Right to Bid scheme. But, the Echo reports, when campaigners the Bitterne Brewery Action Group didn’t bid to buy the property within six months, it was sold to property developers.

Plans were then submitted to redevelop the site into 10 three-bedroom, two-storey homes.

The council rejected these on January 12 due to “site overdevelopment” and “lack of Section 106 agreement”.

The Bitterne Brewery Action Group is now reported to be working on a business plan to try to secure funding.
