A mystery man, so far known only as Dave, jumped into the River Itchen on Saturday and rescued Rebecca Hutton’s black spaniel, Nero – and now Rebecca would like to track down Dave to thank him properly.

Nero had been swimming in the river in Bitterne Park near the picnic tables, but Rebecca said he got into difficultly as the tide was going out.
“Nero was drifting further away downstream and really struggling as he is getting on a bit now,” she said.
“I was starting to worry, but I'm seven months pregnant so I couldn't jump in. The man, Dave, said to me ‘do you want me to go in and get him’.
“He jumped into the cold water and managed to guide Nero back to shore. I really want to thank him as he was very kind to do that. He was with his wife and child, and their pug dog.”
