Talking about culture in Southampton

element arts containers guildhall sqCulture Southampton's 'So Much More' event on Thursday (May 19) invites discussion about the development of Southampton's 'Cultural Manifesto' – “a document that will set out how we move towards our ambition of being UK City of Culture 2029”.

Themes for discussion, according to the Eventbrite page (from where places can be booked), include:

  • how do we support artists and creative people in the city?
  • how can we provide better access to empty spaces for rehearsals and for making art?
  • how do we better communicate the city both internally and externally?
  • how can we truly provide opportunities for anyone to engage in arts and culture?

So Much More takes place at Mettricks, 1 Guildhall Walk, Guildhall Square, Southampton, SO14 from 5pm to 9pm.

There are two further events discussing culture in the city coming up, both on Thursday, June 9:

Supporting a Creative Southampton – Central Hall, Thursday, June 9 2016, 9.30 - 4pm

The CHAOS Conference – organised by the CHAOS Network, which brings together creative, heritage and arts organisations in the city – is billed as a major event for the city.

 It offers a day of “conversation and collaboration: exploring the impact of creatives and creativity on a city; how we sustain and retain the arts; and develop future creative career pathways in Southampton.”

Culture City Fringe Event – The Stage Door, Thursday, June 9, 7pm

“Shining a light on the vibrant cultural life that already thrives here”

stage door 200Then, a Culture City fringe event with Dangerous Ideas offers an evening to share perspectives on Southampton as a place for culture, including interviews with race & diversity pioneer Don John and collaborative artist Sarah Filmer.

“In conversation with Catherine Wright, Don John & Sarah Filmer will talk about how they see our City as a place for art and artists. Reflecting on the last twenty years of work, their perspectives will shine a light on the vibrant cultural life that already thrives here, as well as issues that may be holding us back.”
