Homeless detail by SLR Jester under CC2A new petition opposing public space protection orders in Southampton, which petitioners say "pose a threat to civil liberties and [criminalise] homelessness and begging," has been launched on website 38 Degrees.

It has some 630 signatures at the time of writing.

A previous petition, now closed, gained 216 signatures.

The council is due to decide on introducing the controversial measures in various city zones at a cabinet meeting on Tuesday (March 15 - item 9).

Labour's Cabinet Member for Housing and Sustainability will be seeking authority to introduce the orders.

The petition is here.
