Age UK Southampton celebrates 25 years of the International Day of Older Persons

Age UK Southampton Logo copyAge UK Southampton staff and volunteers will be visible across the city on Thursday (Oct 1), which is the 25th anniversary of International Day of Older Persons – a UN-backed day that recognises the important role of older people in society.

In Southampton there are over 32,000 residents aged 65 and over, and Age UK says this figure is growing as the ‘baby boomer’ generation ages and people live for longer.

Many of these people not only suffer loneliness and isolation, but have little money, poor health, early onset dementia and limited mobility, says the charity.

The International Day of Older Persons acts as a focal point for international ageing policies that are committed to the promotion and protection of human rights and the elimination of age discrimination, neglect, abuse and violence.

As part of the 25th anniversary, staff and volunteers will be presenting, fundraising and providing information in order to make older people in the city aware of the support Age UK Southampton can provide.

Other members of the team will be ready to deal with any enquiries from the public from the offices at Saxon Gate on Back of the Walls by email or phone.

Information at Sainsbury's in Bitterne

Age UK Southampton’s fundraisers will be at Sainsbury's Bitterne West store between 10am-4pm on Friday 2, Saturday 3 and Sunday 4, where information will also be available.

Peter Bennie, Chief Officer at Age UK Southampton, said: “The International Day of Older Persons is a key date in our calendar as it raises the profile of older people issues across the world. Today almost 700million people globally are over the age of 60 and by 2050 this figure will increase to almost 2billion! By celebrating this special day in Southampton, older people in our city will know there are organisations able to support them to live independently into later life.”
