Labour petition against bedroom tax in Bitterne

The Labour Party will be gathering signatures in Bitterne shopping precinct on Wednesday morning (Jan 28) for a petition calling on the Government to repeal its bedroom tax.

Rowenna Davis, Labour's prospective MP for Southampton Itchen, said: "The Bedroom Tax is an unjust measure that hits around half a million low income households. Two thirds of the households affected include a person with a disability, and the tax also hits 60,000 carers. I know from talking to many Southampton residents on the doorstep that they are opposed to this cruel and unfair measure, and this petition gives them an opportunity to get their voices heard."

Davis says she also plans to write to thousands of local residents affected by the tax, setting out Labour's plans to repeal the tax if elected, and offering help to those who have been hit by it.
