Southampton City Council faces cuts in funding by the Lib-Con coalition government of over £18 million – almost £1 in every £10 spent by the city – over the entire course of this parliament.
“Once again, cities like Southampton are decimated while wealthier areas like Winchester are protected. Why should Southampton families lose over £145 each for their council services while wealthier areas are protected?” asked Southampton Test Labour MP Alan Whitehead.
And another Labour MP questioned on Twitter why Labour councils were suffering more than Conservative authorities:
"Average cut imposed on Tory councils by this rotten #Tory LibDem Govt is 3.3% compared to 7.2% for #Labour #councils. All in it together?" tweeted Chris Williamson MP (Derby North).
