Reuseable nappies roadshow

New parents are being invited to a series of 'real nappy' road shows at Southampton Children`s Information Service (CIS) from April 24 to 28.

Southampton Real Nappy Network will be marking the 10th anniversary of Real Nappy Week by providing visitors with information about the environmental impact of disposables and the savings that can be made with reusable nappies.

Across the city up to 35,800 disposable nappies are used each day by parents with babies under the age of two. That adds up to about 13 million nappies a year, just in Southampton.

The nappies are sent to landfill and may take hundreds of years to decompose. In addition, one baby can use up to Ł1,000 worth of disposable nappies, with paper padding equivalent to 20 trees, before he or she grows out of them.

An alternative option is using modern, re-useable nappies. This does not have to mean staying at home washing nappies all day. It is possible to make use of a nappy laundry service, which collects the dirty nappies from your home and delivers clean ones at the same time. The average charge is Ł8 per week. There are currently two laundry services in Southampton.

Reusable cotton nappies also work out cheaper, costing roughly Ł250 per baby.

For more information call in at the CIS shop on Commercial Road, Southampton, between 10am and 12 noon, from April 24 to April 28. Alternatively call the CIS on 0800 169 8833 or Southampton Real Nappy Network on 023 8032 6477.
