The victim had to undergo emergency surgery at Southampton General Hospital for his injuries and is currently recovering.

A 25-year-old man has now been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and is currently being questioned by police, who are also looking into reports that there may have been an earlier stabbing in Vanguard Road which may be linked to this incident.

Officers say they don’t believe the attack was random and think the victim was targeted.

They are still appealing for witnesses, both to the known stabbing and the other possible incident. Anyone with information is asked to call the Operation Belmarsh Team at Bitterne police station on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Update Aug 26: the man arrested has now been released on bail while enquiries continue.
