Cuts will hit Bitterne Park School

This BBC report looks at how this will affect Bitterne Park School

In response to the announcement, Cllr Paul Holmes, Southampton City Council Cabinet Member for Children’s Services and Learning, said: "Given the very difficult finances the new government has inherited we understand the need for this review. This is however a huge disappointment for Southampton. We welcome the new Secretary of State’s commitment to continued investment to rebuild and refurbish schools. We will do all that we can to secure the much needed Government investment for Southampton schools which will complement the significant financial contribution we have pledged locally to education."

John Denham, Labour MP for Southampton Itchen, lambasted the cutting of the programme:  “The whole reorganisation of secondary schools in eastern Southampton depends on this investment in Chamberlayne Park, Sholing, St George's and Bitterne Park. If it is cut now it means that thousands of children will be denied the modern schools they were promised, and our teachers denied the best teaching facilities. It would be an unbearable act of betrayal.

“During the election Mr Cameron was reported by the Daily Echo as promising that the Building Schools for the Future programme in Southampton would be safe.  If the school projects are stopped, or frozen, everyone will know it was an empty and cynical attempt to get votes," he said.

Funding for the new Bitterne Park sixth form comes from a separate stream, so that development is not thought to be affected by this announcement.
