PharmacyAlessandro Filipik opened Il Picchio (the Woodpecker) - a new Italian café and deli - on the Triangle on March 18 (2006) from the site previously occupied by Amelie’s. Meanwhile, over the road, Moss pharmacy will leave the Triangle in June, and an application has been made to turn the former Shell petrol station up the road into a retail store.

Residents will have to make their way to Thorold Road for their prescriptions when Moss pharmacy leaves the Triangle in June. A new facility is being built by PMP Health Developments where the old health clinic used to be. The Bitterne Park GP Surgery is leasing the ground floor and the Primary Care Trust will lease the first and second floor for its health clinic. The pharmacy has made plans with PMP Health Developments to be included at the site.

Opposite Thorold Road, Plessey Investments Ltd have applied to turn the former Shell petrol station into "a single-storey retail store with associated car parking and servicing area".

another tesco express?
written by ndg123, March 19, 2006
I hope the Shell won't be another Tesco Express or similar store. The shops on West End Road and Lodge Road don't seem to have enough parking - traffic is always queuing back onto the road and causing congestion. Since Cobden Avenue is a major route in and out of the city, rush hour is going become unbearable.
And what impact on the triangle shops of those kind of 'competitors' ?

This could be a disaster for the triangle!!
Who on earth permitted this decision?
The space here , on the old garage site would be better if it was used for parking thus encouraging more local residents to use the triangle.I am suprised our 'radical' local politicians havent noticed this.

Bad news

Yes, the tailback onto West End Rd at the Tesco Express is a nightmare! I agree the Shell site would be great as a car park.

chaos

Great food at Il Picchio.
I thought the Shell petrol station was handy as a, er, petrol station - tricky junction though. It would obviously be chaos with a retail store there.

Tesco

I checked out Plessey Investments, the applicants, on Google and found, re another site..

"Finally in 2000 the land was bought by Plessey Investments on behalf of Tesco"

so it could well be them :-( I don't think the planning decision has been made public yet though.

Re Tesco
written by newtonite, April 04, 2006
Tesco are like a plague.
I think this would be a disaster for the Triangle and would be a disaster for road users with tailbacks on a busy road while shoppers who leave their cars after filling up 'browse'!!
Is there any way to oppose this?

Stupid, Stupid, Stupid!
written by parsl, April 05, 2006
See the planning application at http://publicaccess.southampto...blicaccess
It is number 05/01645/FUL

There will not be a petrol station on the site - just a store. Its a terrible idea, we lose a petrol station that was useful and get a store that we don't need but will harm trade in the triangle and cause traffic problems. The 35 flats to be built on the British legion site, who might have been extra custom for the triangle, will not walk past this store to the triangle now! :sigh
Wish I'd heard about it in time to object :upset

Objecting to the retail store
written by ancrenne, April 10, 2006
I've been in touch with Peter Baillie about this and he has suggested I contact the planning dept (which I have done) and ask them when the meeting with councillors will be to discuss this. I will post up the date when I have it - Peter said it carries a lot of weight if people actually come and object- so watch this space and come along! We should be given seven days notice of the meeting so if anyone else sees it mentioned anywhere, please post details smilies/smiley.gif

Tesco Express

I would welcome a Tesco Express on the old BP site, or at least another petrol station. I don't mind using Co-Op for some things, but find them rather expensive.

BP site ?
written by ndg123, May 21, 2006
It wasn't a BP site, it was Shell until recently. I would have thought most Bitterne Park residents would know that.
This isn't going have a petrol station - that's another service which is being monopolised by large supermarket chains.

Tesco

Any news about objecting to Tesco Express on the old Shell site, there seems to be a lot of action. I don't like the idea of a Tescos being there, the loss of the Chemist is a bad enough blow.

Yikes, it's hard enough turning right out of St Catherine's Rd as it is!
Anyone know what's happening with the old Moss chemist shop?

Opticians
written by Charlie, May 01, 2007
Can anyone tell me if they would find a local Optician at The Triangle useful? Would local people use it?
